You were once again allowed to vote for our next blog post and could choose between lemon, garlic or ginger! The ginger root won!
As if you guessed it! According to the specialist for medicinal herbs, Dr. James A. Duke, the ginger root (and garlic too, by the way) is one of the 12 best healing foods.
Well, my conclusion from all the research is this: Always have ginger in the house! So, I won't keep you in suspense for long and will start with the facts:
1. Ginger relieves flatulence. - So feel free to add ginger to your next bean stew or lentil dish. As an evening tea, ginger would also relieve gas in the stomach.
2. But beware: Ginger contains mood enhancers such as caffeic acid, melatonin and quercetin and stimulants such as borneol and camphor which are used in depression help. - I know people who say that if they drink ginger in the evening they can't sleep. So check when ginger tea is good for you.
3. In general, ginger has a calming effect on the stomach. This fact is often mentioned in the media and is also known in Ayurveda. 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger together with a teaspoon of lime juice has an alkaline and calming effect on the stomach.
4. Ginger contains at least 4 natural COX-2 inhibitors. These are active ingredients that have an anti-inflammatory effect, particularly in cases of arthritis and rheumatism. An Indian study shows that 3.5 teaspoons of fresh ginger daily reduced pain and swelling in 75% of patients.
5. Bronchitis is another condition for which ginger (or hot spices) is highly praised. The spiciness dilates the blood vessels, irritating the mucous membranes in the throat and nose and causing them to secrete a watery secretion. This makes it easier to cough up/blow the nose.
6th Ginger oil is wonderful for relieving muscle tension. - So massage it into your skin before you go to bed. Especially in the cold season.
7. Finally, an interesting fact: we do not actually eat the root of ginger but the rhizome (see picture above).
So, I can understand why ginger is so highly praised. Can you?
